2009 Conference Follow-Up: Improving Adolescent Literacy: Effective Classroom and Intervention Practices

These are the archived follow-up materials from the 2009 conference. We are excited to be preparing even more in-depth follow-up for this year's conference. This information is currently available for your reference.

IES Recommended Practices

This section contains the “heart” of the strand - brief PowerPoint presentations which summarize each of the recommendations within the IES Adolescent Literacy Practice Guide. All information contained within the presentations comes directly from Improving Adolescent Literacy: Effective Classroom and Intervention Practices. Schools are welcome to use these presentations for staff development purposes.

Suggested Use: Individual study or small group review with discussion of implications for strengthening local math programs. These materials are a good starting point for groups or individuals who were not able to attend the conference. It is recommended that these materials be studied first before viewing other follow-up materials.

Planning Guide

This planning guide has been created using the recommendations and checklists from the IES Practice Guide Improving Adolescent Literacy: Effective Classroom and Intervention Practices (Kamil et al., 2008).

Suggested Use: Districts and/or schools can use the guide to:

  • Conduct an overall "screening" to determine the extent to which research-based recommendations described in the Adolescent Literacy Practice Guide are being implemented within the district or school;
  • Determine a district or school's specific strengths and weaknesses related to implementation of research-based practices in adolescent literacy; and
  • Develop school improvement plans in adolescent literacy based on areas of need as determined by completion of the Adolescent Literacy Planning Guide.

Strand Highlights

In this section you will find a summary of each conference presentation within the Adolescent Literacy strand. Also ncluded are:
  • Presentations from all strand speakers (PowerPoint handouts)
  • A summary of key points from each presentation
  • Short audio clips of important points made by each speaker
  • Video clips of an interview with one of the speakers in this strand (Coming soon!)

Suggested use: The PowerPoint presentations, strand highlights, presenter audio clips, and speaker interview can be used to extend the knowledge gained from the IES Practice Guide and assist in applying the recommendations within classrooms. These materials can be used for individual learning as well as study and discussion within small group formats such as grade level teams, department level teams, and professional learning communities. In addition, the materials in this section could be used for professional development activities related to school improvement goals for an entire staff.

Readings from Research, Publications of Interest, and Suggested Links
