IES Recommended Practices

This section contains the “heart” of the strand - brief PowerPoint presentations which summarize each of the recommendations within the IES English Language Instruction Practice Guide. All information contained within the presentations comes directly from Effective Literacy and English Language Instruction for English Learners in the Elementatry Grades. Schools are welcome to use these presentations for staff development purposes.

Suggested Use: Individual study or small group review with discussion of implications for strengthening local math programs. These materials are a good starting point for groups or individuals who were not able to attend the conference. It is recommended that these materials be studied first before viewing other follow-up materials.

Planning Guide

This planning guide has been created using the recommendations and checklists from the IES Practice Guide Effective Literacy and English Language Instruction for English Learners in the Elementary Grades (Gersten et al., 2007).

Suggested Use: Districts and/or schools can use the guide to:

  • Conduct an overall "screening" to determine the extent to which research-based recommendations described in the English Language Learners Practice Guide are being implemented within the district or school;
  • Determine a district or school's specific strengths and weaknesses related to implementation of research-based practices for English language learners; and
  • Develop school improvement plans For English language learners based on areas of need as determined by completion of the Planning Guide.

Strand Highlights

In this section you will find a summary of each conference presentation within the English Language Instruction strand. Also ncluded are:
  • Presentations from all strand speakers (PowerPoint handouts)
  • A summary of key points from each presentation
  • Short audio clips of important points made by each speaker
  • Video clips of an interview with one of the speakers in this strand (Coming soon!)

Suggested use: The PowerPoint presentations, strand highlights, presenter audio clips, and speaker interview can be used to extend the knowledge gained from the IES Practice Guide and assist in applying the recommendations within classrooms. These materials can be used for individual learning as well as study and discussion within small group formats such as grade level teams, department level teams, and professional learning communities. In addition, the materials in this section could be used for professional development activities related to school improvement goals for an entire staff.

Readings from Research, Publications of Interest, and Suggested Links

This section identifies and provides links to selected research summaries, key publications and highly relevant websites, all of which can extend understanding and provide useful information, guidelines and tools for improving math instruction for all students.

Suggested Use: These publications are available for individual or group study and discussion. The web links can be extremely helpful for finding other documents, resources, tools, etc. which will enhance your planning and implementation of program improvements.
