This planning guide has been created using the recommendations and checklists from the IES Practice Guide Effective Literacy and English Language Instruction for English Learners in the Elementary Grades (Gersten et al., 2007).
Suggested Use: Districts and/or schools can use the guide to:
- Conduct an overall "screening" to determine the extent to which research-based recommendations described in the English Language Learners Practice Guide are being implemented within the district or school;
- Determine a district or school's specific strengths and weaknesses related to implementation of research-based practices for English language learners; and
- Develop school improvement plans For English language learners based on areas of need as determined by completion of the Planning Guide.
