2009 Conference Follow-Up: Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Response to Intervention for Elementary and Middle Schools

These are the archived follow-up materials from the 2009 conference. We are excited to be preparing even more in-depth follow-up for this year's conference. This information is currently available for your reference.

IES Recommended Practices

This section contains the “heart” of the strand - brief PowerPoint presentations which summarize each of the recommendations within the IES Math Practice Guide. All information contained within the presentations comes directly from Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Response to Intervention (Rti) for Elementary and Middle Schools. Schools are welcome to use these presentations for staff development purposes.

Suggested Use: Individual study or small group review with discussion of implications for strengthening local math programs. These materials are a good starting point for groups or individuals who were not able to attend the conference. It is recommended that these materials be studied first before viewing other follow-up materials.

Planning Guide

This planning guide has been created using the recommendations and checklists from the IES Practice Guide Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Response to Intervention (RtI) for Elementary and Middle Schools (Gersten et al., 2009).

Suggested Use: Districts and/or schools can use the guide to:

  • Conduct an overall "screening" to determine the extent to which research-based recommendations described in the Elementary and Middle Schools Math Practice Guide are being implemented within the district or school;
  • Determine a district or school's specific strengths and weaknesses related to implementation of research-based math practices in elementary and middle schools; and
  • Develop school improvement plans in elementary and middle school math based on areas of need as determined by completion of the Planning Guide.
